Raising Climate Change Awareness

Earth Hour, which began in Sydney Australia in 2007, is an international event held on the last Saturday of March. People worldwide turn-off non-essential lights and appliances for one hour to raise awareness about the need for action on climate change.

In 2007, 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour and in the following year the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the sponsors of the event, in 2008 "global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome's Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness" ( http://www.earthhour.org/about/ ). This year the goal is to have 1 billion people switching off their lights.

You can participate by:
1.      Turning off all non-essential lights on Saturday, March 28 at 8:30 pm.
2.      Encouraging family, friends and local businesses to participate.
