Forests are amazing assemblages of species that form complex social-ecological systems encompassing both natural and cultural components. They exist at various landscape scales ranging from the local to the global. Maintaining the ecosystem integrity of forests is urgent, however. Consequently solutions that would slow the rate of deforestation and provide guidance on how to sustainably manage forests are being sought by governments and other stakeholders.
